Youth in livestock, the engine for change: strategic partnerships with a private company (CIAT/CCAFS-Alqueria): The beginnings, incentives, and objectives of the Herederos de Tradición (Heirs of Tradition) initiative carried out by Alquería’s farmer training programs.

In 2012, the private dairy company Alquería launched its first pilot training program for small-scale milk producers, MACA. The name MACA derives from the pilot’s initial test region in the municipalities near the Macarena mountain range in El Meta, Colombia. This particular area has been identified for the urgent need to tackle the low rates of schooling of its producers, and the need for a technification of the livestock farms to increase their productivity and, in turn, the quality of life of their managers. Alliances to transform: Young livestock producers and the impact of farmer training programs, the case of “Heirs of Tradition”

Insufficient schooling rates among livestock producing families are pivotal in preventing an effective generational transfer and gender and social equality in Colombia’s rural settings. Concurrently, low literacy rates are now understood as a critical factor hindering the livestock sector’s productivity and sustainability. Even though several academic readings and approximations to Colombian rurality have stressed the importance of educational opportunities as mean to effectively integrate national peasantry and promote equality, coverage still falls short. In this study we address these subjects through the examination of the case study “Heirs of Tradition”, an initiative carried out by Alquería, a major Colombian dairy company. Our objectives are to assess the impact achieved in terms of generational transfer and gender equality in a modernizing dairy sector. We based our analysis on in-depth interviews and the review of primary sources from the company’s own archive and secondary, scientific and academic sources. Findings suggest that cooperation between actors is key to address generational transfer and that education and technical support can both reduce low schooling rates amongst rural livestock producers and contribute to closing the gender gap that persists in the sector. We also highlight the achievements and lessons learned, underscoring the issues that could be better addressed and overall emphasizing how the continuity of such programs favors knowledge transfer and empowers communities

Youth in livestock and the transformative power of rural education: the case of Heirs of Tradition, 2012–2020

“¿Cómo vamos a hacer para seguir estudiando?” fue una de las primeras preguntas que hizo Luisa, estudiante del programa en producción ganadera Herederos de Tradición, ejecutado por Alquería y el SENA (Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje) en Colombia, a sus profesores, ante el implacable avance de la pandemia del COVID-19 en Colombia.1 A simple vista, las complicaciones previsibles que traería consigo el aislamiento obligatorio de la población para frenar el avance del contagio podrían sortearse de manera virtual, tal y como muchos estudiantes de colegios y universidades urbanos hacen todavía. En el campo colombiano, sin embargo, el panorama es radicalmente diferente. A los problemas de una conectividad digital escasa, costosa, y poco accesible se le suma el impacto económico que la crisis ha significado para los hogares rurales, la creciente deserción educativa ante las nuevas urgencias familiares y la dificultad para impartir conocimientos prácticos y técnicos de manera remota.2 (Gaviria, 2017; Matijasevic, 2015)

“How can we continue with our studies?” was one of the first questions asked to the teachers by Luisa, a student attending the Heirs of Tradition livestock production program, implemented by Alquería and the National Training Service (SENA, its Spanish acronym) in Colombia, in view of the relentless spread of the COVID- 19 pandemic in Colombia.1 At first sight, the predictable complications brought along by mandatory confinement to halt the spread of the pandemic could be overcome virtually, the way many students from urban schools and universities are still doing. In the Colombian countryside however, the picture is radically different. In addition to issues related to limited, expensive and not very accessible connectivity, there is the economic impact of the crisis on rural households, the increasing school dropout rates in response to the emerging family needs and the difficulty to provide practical and technical knowledge remotely.2 (Gaviria, 2017; Matijasevic, 2015)
